The Orange Dragon Foundation was founded in 2020 and aims to raise as much money as possible for research into treatment and quality of life of ovarian cancer patients. The Orange Dragon Foundation envisions a world in which every woman, when confronted with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, can nevertheless lead a full and meaningful life.
The main goal of the foundation is to raise funds to promote and support (scientific) research into the treatment of ovarian cancer so that the chances of survival are increased and sufficient quality of life will be ensured.
The Orange Dragon Foundation is run by an unpaid board and volunteers.
Board and volunteers
The Orange Dragon Foundation was founded by Saskia and is run by an unpaid board and a number of volunteers. They would like to introduce themselves to you below:
Rutger Amons – chairman
I got acquainted with the Orange Dragon Foundation as a former colleague of Saskia in an organic food shop in Utrecht, when she sought a place for one of her cats to live during her voyage.
I am 55 years, living in Utrecht the Netherlands with Sebastiaan (the cat), and have worked in many fields, i.e. education, cooking, music, organic food, research and many more. Now studying to become a certified Nature Guide.
Not currently working professionally, but still exploring life in all its limits and beyond. Wild foraging, fermenting food, cooking, thinking, writing, making music, reading, travelling by train, bicycle or feet, being outside and meeting people is what keeps me going.
Happy to be chairman of a foundation that tries to create positive change and raise awareness.
Rebeca Godoy Hurtado
My name is Rebeca Godoy, I’m Venezuelan. I’ve known Saskia for some time, we are both engaged in literature reading sessions through an online platform. Her friendship and meaningful project has encouraged me to step in, looking for and maintaining contact with sponsors, and also keeping updated the upcoming newsletter.
As a psychologist and human being I’m interested in people’s wish for personal development and fulfillment. For this reason, I couldn’t not be part of this team and contribute to this beautiful challenge.
What would you do if you were told that you are terminally ill and a recovery is not possible through modern medical intervention? I would’t know. Saskia does know. She does what she loves to do and connects this with a good cause. I think that is wonderful and therfore I did not have to think long when she asked me to be board member of the foundation.
My name is Alberta Rollema. My passions are nature, organic agriculture and cooking. I earn a living with my own company www.oogstenkokeneneten.nl and as a self-employed care professional. My goal is to support Saskia in any way I can, together with the other board members.
Vlad Petrea – treasurer
Saskia made an impression on my parents while hiking solo in the Carpathian mountains. A few years after their encounter I went to visit her in The Netherlands and discovered a person who challenged my world views in a good way.
We kept loose contact until her Orange Dragon world tour brought her to Vienna and she asked me to join the Foundation. Knowing about her cause and the bravery she shows under circumstances most of us spend a lifetime hoping to avoid makes me feel proud to have the chance of supporting her and her cause.
I work as a business analyst and life transition coach. I am reluctantly addicted to technology and happily addicted to swing music and dancing.
Ria van Loon – press contacts
My name is Ria van Loon. One of my hobbies is singing, and I know Saskia from that. We sing both in the “Drents Kamerkoor” (where we soon will have to miss Saskia …!)
I help the Orange Dragon Foundation with maintaining press contacts and writing texts.
I have been retired since 2019. I always worked in healthcare, in the hospital in Assen: as a physiotherapist, and also for a long time as a manager of the rehabilitation ward.
Now I am committed to participation of the elderly, amongst other things as a member of the Council of the Elderly (an advisory council of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports)
My passion is travelling, but I am a little less adventurous than Saskia!
Birgül Özmen – social media
My name is Birgül Özmen. In daily life I am a city councillor for D66 in The Hague and a policy advisor at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. I have known Saskia for almost 20 years. We once studied together at Utrecht University. We share a great interest in, amongst other things, the Middle East (my Kurdish roots) and travelling. I admire Saskia’s persistence and commitment to a better world, especially for women. I would like to contribute to this by managing our social media accounts.
Ciska Kroeze – accounting
I am Ciska Kroeze. Saskia and I sing together at the “Drents Kamerkoor”. Under “normal” circumstances we carpool together from Emmen to Westerbork. I work for an administration office, where I mainly deal with payroll and annual accounts. When Saskia asked me if I wanted to take care of the Foundation’s accounting, I immediately said yes! I enjoy contributing to this great project in this way.
Stichting Oranje Draak / Orange Dragon Foundation is registered in the municipality of Emmen, with the following activities: Raising funds for research into the treatment of ovarian cancer and for supporting women who are confronted with this disease during their treatment and / or in their lifetime afterwards.
